Chapter Two

Jesus.

Cain had been evicted three weeks ago, and he’d managed to spend the night at Denny’s for all but two nights of those. Tonight, though, it was cold, and Denny had been out of town on business, and he had barely enough for a hotel room in his pocket.

That was why he was sitting in an all-night coffee shop with his suitcase under his legs, drinking cup after cup of coffee, waiting for morning.

He’d not been terribly stupid about it. He’d given all his paintings and comics to Denny, slowly, one after another, so they were safe. Everything else was either gone—thrown out on the sidewalk for the garbage men—or in his bag.

God, he needed a job.

He stirred his coffee, adding a little more sugar. He really ought to have asked Denny for help, but… Denny already gave him so much, loved him so much. He couldn’t bear to ask for more.

The little bell on the shop’s door jangled, and to his utter shock, in walked Denny. The man strode up to the counter. “Can you get me a double with a shot of espresso, please? I’m going to fall asleep and crash the car if I don’t get some caffeine in me.”

Oh.

Oh, man.

What was he supposed to do?

He kept his eyes on the table, chewing his bottom lip. Home. Denny was home!

“Thank you. Wrap me up a couple of those lemon cream doughnuts, too. I know someone with a sweet-sour tooth.”

Denny grabbed the doughnut bag and his coffee and headed out again. Cain thought Denny wouldn’t notice him, but the long strides slowed and then stopped. “Cain?”

He blinked up, a smile blooming on his face. He couldn’t help it. Unshaven, a little dirty, exhausted and cold—seeing his lover made it all disappear.

“Denny.”

“Hey!” Denny stood there blinking at him for a moment and then laughed. “Sorry. The fucking plane only just got in and I’m not with it. What are you doing here, darlin’?”

“Drinking coffee. You look tired.”

Denny leaned against the back of a chair. “I am. Tired enough that if I sit, I’m going to have trouble getting going again. Why don’t you come home with me?”

“Yeah? You wouldn’t mind the company?” Please. He’d love a night in a real bed.

“Oh, stop that. You know I love it when you’re over.” Denny inclined his head toward the door. “Come on. What were you doing having coffee at four in the morning, anyway?”

“What are you doing here?” He finished his cup, grabbed his bag and stood.

“I was half asleep at the wheel coming home from the airport and decided I’d better stop for coffee.” Denny frowned, but moved them to the door, his little car sitting right out front. “But you didn’t answer my question, and now, it’s what are you doing here at four in the morning with a suitcase?”

“It’s complicated. Do you need me to drive?” He hadn’t slept in days, but he’d do it, for Denny.

“Nah, I’m good.” Denny slid into the car, downing about a third of his coffee.
